Deck the walls with Christmas Cheer

Lighting is a great way to create visual impact, so your Christmas decorating could be as simple as stringing Christmas lights around railings, windows, doorframes and even the mirrors in the bathroom. If you’re buying new lights, it would be more cost effective in the long run to choose LEDs or solar-powered lights to save on the power bill!

From there you could take it even further and add tinsel.  Drape that slinky, shining rope over railings, around doorways or across the ceiling of any room.  You could co-ordinate colours to match your soft furnishings to complete the look.

Hang Christmas stockings on a shelf, or a window. Put your Christmas cards out on display. They’re an easy way to incorporate seasonal imagery and remember loved ones.

Set the mood for Christmas Day

Small details can make a big difference when adding a seasonal touch to your home.

  • Cut a piece of fresh rosemary, add a cinnamon stick and some lavender and tie it all together with red ribbon. Not only will it look fantastic but the smell will be instantly evocative.
  • Tie a couple of large silver bells with festive ribbon and hang them on the front door.
  • Stand some plain white candles in glass jars; tie green, red or gold ribbon around them and place on tables, mantles and in the bathroom.  Simple but very effective
  • Get the kids involved by making paper chain decorations, either for the table or to be hung around the room
